Unfold Video review: what branching fixes, and what it does not

It lets viewers choose their own path through a video. Here is the retention problem that solves, the production cost it adds, and the three things I would test in the first hour.

Unfold Video builds interactive branching video. That is a narrower proposition than most video launches make, and being narrow is the most interesting thing about it — it aims at a specific measurable problem rather than promising to replace your production process.

Linear video versus interactive branching video in Unfold Video LINEAR VIDEO One path. Every viewer sees the same thing, and drops off at the same place. INTERACTIVE BRANCHING VIDEO Viewer chooses at each split — four different journeys from one build.
The distinction Unfold Video is built on: a linear video plays one path, an interactive one branches at decision points so each viewer follows a route they chose.

This review covers what that is worth, who it fits, and who should skip it. For pricing and links see the Unfold Video Bundle Deal breakdown.

What this review is

I have not run this software. This is an assessment of the published proposition and the category, not a hands-on test.

#The problem it targets

Every linear video has the same weakness: one path, one drop-off point. Open your analytics on any video you have published and you will find a cliff — a moment where a large share of viewers leave. It is usually the same moment for everyone, because everyone is watching the same thing.

Branching addresses that directly. If a viewer is not interested in the pricing section, they choose the feature section instead and keep watching. Retention rises not because the content improved but because irrelevant content stopped being forced on them.

Branching does not make a video better. It makes an irrelevant section skippable — which is a real gain, and a smaller one than most sales pages imply.

#Who it fits

Anyone selling a product with genuinely different buyer types. A tool used by beginners and professionals needs two different demos. One branching video replaces two productions and routes each viewer correctly.

Course creators and trainers. Letting a learner choose their level is the clearest use case in the list, and one where the pedagogical benefit is not just marketing language.

Agencies producing demos at volume. If you build video for clients, this is a service you can charge more for because almost nobody offers it. That is the strongest commercial case here.

Anyone with an existing video that loses people at a known point. You have the data, you know where the cliff is, and branching is a direct response to it.

#Who should skip it

If you do not publish video already

This is the disqualifier. Interactive video is an optimisation of a process you must already have. Buying it before you have published a linear video is buying the second step first.

If you have not looked at your retention data

Branching solves a drop-off problem. If you do not know where your viewers leave — or whether they leave at all — you cannot know whether this helps. That data is free and takes five minutes to check.

If you do not have the extra footage

This is the practical cost nobody mentions. A four-branch video needs roughly four times the material of a linear one. The builder makes assembling paths easy; it does not film them. If your bottleneck is production rather than structure, this adds work rather than removing it.

If your videos already hold viewers

Some formats do. If your retention curve is flat, the problem branching solves is not one you have.

#What I would test first

Rebuild one existing video as a branch. Not a new idea — one you have retention data for. That gives you a before and after rather than a guess.

Check how the interaction renders on mobile. Most video is watched on a phone, and choice buttons that work on a desktop preview can be unusable at thumb size.

Find out where it can be embedded. Interactive video usually needs a player that supports it. If it only works on the vendor's hosting, that is a meaningful constraint on where you can publish.

Test the lead capture end to end. In-video forms are the commercially interesting feature. Find out what they connect to before building anything around them.

#Verdict

Interactive video is a real technique with a real mechanism behind it, and it is under-used enough that doing it well is still a differentiator. For an agency, that alone may justify the purchase.

What it is not is a fix for videos nobody watches. Branching raises retention among people who already pressed play. Getting them to press play is a different problem, and no tier in this funnel addresses it.

If you publish video, know where your drop-off is, and have the footage to fill more than one path — this is well aimed at you. If any of those three is missing, it is aimed at someone else.

#Common questions

What is Unfold Video?
A platform for building interactive branching video — videos where the viewer chooses what happens next instead of watching one fixed sequence. The vendor describes a drag-and-drop builder, cloud rendering with nothing to install, and lead capture forms inside the video.
Is Unfold Video worth it?
It depends on whether you already publish video and know where viewers drop off. Branching solves a retention problem, and you need to have that problem before the solution is worth paying for.
Do I need video editing skills?
The vendor describes a drag-and-drop builder with no software to install. What you do need is the material — branching requires more footage than a linear video, because each path needs content.
What can you use interactive video for?
Product demos that adapt to what the buyer needs, training where the learner picks their level, quiz-style videos routing toward a recommendation, and onboarding that skips what the user already knows.
Who should skip Unfold Video?
Anyone not currently publishing video, anyone whose videos are watched to the end already, and anyone without the extra footage that branching requires.
Does Unfold Video include commercial rights?
Commercial rights sit in the paid tiers rather than the base licence in most funnels of this shape. Confirm on the checkout page for the tier you buy before doing client work with it.
